I actually own a mildly ridiculous number of coats and jackets (I rationalize it by explaining that I'm from Wisconsin, as if that would justify it all), but not the one for who I am now. I'm looking for something masculine, roomy, warm and the perfect balance between structured and drapey. I didn't think it would be hard to find but it's actually turning out to be quite elusive. This Proenza Schouler coat comes closest so far in my hunt, but also rings it at a hefty $1750, which is approximately a billion time my budget (or might as well be).
It's a good one though, don't you think? Dream coat material for sure. Anyone out there know of a similar coat in a lower price range? Where do you go when you're on the hunt for a piece like this? Do you own your dream coat?
This coat is really fab. Love it! Check out all the Secondhand Shops, fleamarkets and charity shops in your hometown. You´ll find a bunch of navy coats, that´s easy. But the difficult part is to find the perfect size. Usually you´ll find them at the man´s department. Good Luck!

I've actually tried in men's departments, but then they fit too wide on the shoulders, too snug on the bum. Just going to have to keep hunting!
DeleteYou're very right there about men's fit and wide shoulders and slim hips. I was thinking I'm not that big but why is that jumper hem so snug around my butt?
DeleteGet thee to Uniqulo! I have a coat like the proenza one from the last J+ collection as well as a stunner in olive green, made out of the softest wool blend. The brand is known for its puffers but I was just in one of the stores last week & was wildly tempted by adding more coats to my collection.
ReplyDeleteI know there is one in Paris as well as a couple in London...
Wow, thanks for the tip! This beauty (J+, like you said) is cashmere and on sale for $80!

I'm always wary of purchasing online if I haven't tried it on before, or if I'm not super familiar with the way a brand cuts their garments, so I'm hesitant to do this, but somebody out there should snap these up! Wish we had one here in Madrid, I've actually been wanting one of their puffy jackets to layer under coats for colder weather. Guess I'll just have to move ;)
I hear you on not buying a coat online - but I guess it could mean a trip to Paris or London? ;-) I will say that the wool coats look so much better in the store than online whereas the puffers look fab online but are a bit shiny in reality. Though the collaboration with Theory is top quality - much much nicer than the standard ones.
DeleteThe J+ coat I have is very similar to the one on sale, i live in it & it travels well as its not super delicate (translation it can be' placed in The overhead bin on a plane..)
Wouldn't some colorful cashmere be appreciated by loved ones as holiday pressies? :-)
I've seen the puffers in person and while I'm not crazy about the finish or the colors, I do think they'd make an amazing layering piece underneath a great coat for super cold days, they seem like they'd squish down into nothing but keep you really warm. Good to know about the quality of the coats though, thanks for that. If only I could justify skipping off to London to buy a coat, but I think I'd probably have a much bigger coat budget too!
DeleteDream coat material, I agree :) I actually have a coat similar to this (well, a LOT less cool and a LOT less expensive) from British brand Whistles.
ReplyDeleteI love navy blue and it's surprisingly hard to find a good coat in this colour. This is a piece you'd wear forever, I think.
As for my dream coat, it's a Etoile Isabel Marant alpaca coat I bought last year during the winter sales at an amazing price. Love it forever :)
Oooh, snagging IM at an amazing price is something to be proud of indeed! How lucky to have not only found your dream coat, but to have found it on sale! I am still searching... Stay tuned, the saga continues...
